REGISTRATION UPDATE AS OF JANUARY 4th
Taney Basketball has over 325 registered players for 2012-2013 and for the third straight year has set a registration record.
NCAA (Coed 6-7 and 7-8 year old age groups) has 173 players and has started a waiting list. There are 9 teams in the 6-7 group and 8 teams in the 7-8 group.
WNBA (Girls 9 to 12 year old age group) has 48 players with several drafted players not yet registered. The WNBA has 6 teams.
NBA (9-10) has 71 players on 8 teams.
NBA (11-12) has 30 players and needs more coaches and players to get to 4 teams of 8 players.

TYBA is happy to announce that there is no fee increase for Taney Basketball for 2012. The registration fee remains only $90.00.

One of TYBA's goals is to provide a quality but affordable instructional baseball league. TYBA's registration fees remain among the lowest in the area. TYBA does not have special fundraisers or concessions stands to raise funds. The registration fee of $90.00 does not provide all of the income needed to offset expenses for uniforms, equipment, gymnasium rental, insurance, printing, postage and trophies. The balance of TYBA's income has always come from personal and business contributions. TYBA does not turn away any child, regardless of the family's ability to pay.

If you are able, please consider sponsoring a team for $400.00, or making a tax-deductible $100.00 "Friend of TYBA" or $40.00 "Fair Share" contribution. Please check to see if your employer offers matching contributions. Please click here for the 2012 Fair Share Letter. Please click here for the 2012 Sponsor Letter and here for the 2012 Sponsor Form. Support TYBA and help us continue to provide quality basketball instruction to Center City kids!

Please register ON-LINE and pay by credit card by clicking here. If you are interested in coaching or otherwise volunteering, please indicate that on the registration form in the volunteer section. You also can use the registration link after registration to log in to view or update information, as well as to make a payment or donation. Any problems registering, please contact Jim King at [email protected].

If your child has participated in TYBA before, you will need your username and password to complete the registration. If you have forgotten your password, follow the prompts to reset it. If you are new to TYBA, please follow the prompts to obtain a username and password. If you are able to register on-line but unable to pay on line, please send a check in the appropriate amount to Taney Basketball, 9 North Third Street, Box 100, Philadelphia, PA 19106. If you are unable to register or pay on-line, please click here for a paper registration form. All paper registration forms should be returned with a check in the appropriate amount to Taney Basketball, 9 North Third Street, Box 100, Philadelphia, PA 19106. If you have any questions, please contact Jim King at [email protected]. Please be patient if the paper form is not available on Wednesday morning. We will get it posted as soon as we can.

TYBA has established the Bob Hyland Memorial Fund in honor of Bob Hyland, who passed away unexpectedly on October 6, 2011. Please click here or on the Bob Hyland page on the left to learn more about Bob and TYBA's efforts to honor his legacy. To donate to the Bob Hyland Memorial Fund, click here.

BASKETBALL FAQs:
What is Taney Basketball?
Taney Basketball is in its third year with over 275 boys and girls playing basketball last Winter in 3 different gymnasiums each weekend from early November through the end of February. We expect to have the same or similar age groups as last year:
A player's age is as of September 1, 2012.
Coed 6-8 year olds (with 7 year olds playing 6-7 or 7-8 depending on age, skill and parent preference)
Coed 9-10 year olds
Coed 11-12 year olds
Girls 9-12 year olds
We very much want to add a Girls 6-8 year old group if numbers and gym space permit, but we need many more girls to register than last year in order to make it work.

How much does Taney Basketball cost?
Taney Basketball for 2012-2013 will cost the same $90 as last year and the year before. Each child will receive a tee shirt for games and a trophy at the end of the season.

How long is the season?
The season runs from early December until the end of February.

What is the age cutoff for basketball?
September 1st, meaning your child must be at least 6 years old and not 13 years old as of September 1st, 2011. We list the ages as 6 to 12 but will take 5 and 13 year olds as appropriate.

When do practices and games take place?
We expect that your child will have a half hour practice followed immediately by a game for a total time of approximately 1 1/2 hours on Saturday and/or Sunday afternoons at varying times each week between 12 pm and 6 pm from the middle of November until the end of February. We will not know whether your child will play on Saturday and/or Sunday until early November when we confirm gym availability and schedule games based on registration numbers in each age group.

Where do practices and games take place?
Old Pine Community Center at 401 Lombard Street, Friends Select School at 1651 Benjamin Franklin Parkway and The Philadelphia School at 2501 Lombard Street. You cannot choose where your child will play. We will not know in which gym your child will play until early November when we confirm gym availability and schedule games based on the registration numbers in each age group.

Last year 6 to 8 year olds played between 12 pm and 6 pm at The Philadelphia School at 26th and Lombard. 11 and 12 year olds played between 12 pm and 4 pm at Old Pine Community Center at 4th and Lombard. 9-10 year olds and 9-12 year old Girls played from 2 pm to 6 pm at Friends Select School at 16th and Ben Franklin Parkway.

How will my child be placed on a team?
We will have evaluations the first week of the season on November 10th. The purpose of the evaluations is to create balanced teams. Drafts for all age groups will take place shortly after November 10th. Players will be notified as soon as possible, as practices and games begin the following Saturday, November 17th. Players cannot request to be on a team with friends or neighbors. Siblings are on the same team unless they request not to be. Children of coaches are on the coaches' teams unless there is a request not to be.

Who are the referees?
Taney Basketball expects to use paid referees for some or all of the age groups this year. We expect that parents will also volunteer their time as referees this year in some or all of the age groups.

How can you help Taney Basketball?
Please help spread the word about Taney Basketball to your friends and neighbors.
We need help to administer the league, coach, and referee if we do not use paid referees for all age groups. If you are interested in helping out at games by keeping score or otherwise helping with a team, wait for your child to be drafted and offer your help to your coach when he contacts you. If you want to be a head or assistant coach, please email Jim King at [email protected].
